Oilcloth DeMYstified
Yesterday, we received a question from a new customer "What is oilcloth?" We get this question every once in a while so here's a little education to feed your oilcloth curiosity....
In the 1800's, oilcloth was a cotton fabric treated with linseed oil for waterproofness. Originally sported by fishermen, sailors, and others in inclement positions. During the mid 20th century oilcloth in bright plaids and flower splattered patterns was a common covering for kitchen tables. Now shiny, kitchy 1950s retro printed oilcloth is produced in Mexico and can be easily be found from a number of suppliers on the internet.
In Europe, high quality cottons are coated to become "oilcloth" and it is from these textiles that we take our inspiration. We, Michele & Yvette, have created a modern luxury oilcloth by designing our own patterns and then printing these patterns on 100% cotton and then applying a durable translucent coating that says supple in all conditions. All design work is done here in our Massachusetts studio and then our fabric is printed and coated in Korea. We then produce a line of totes and handbags that are as resilent as women themselves.
Frankly, we love all types of oilcloth. Many different kinds for many different uses. We are proud to offer a US designed oilcloth that is of the highest quality beacuse after all feeling is believing.
