Tis the season for baking pies, connecting with family and getting a jump on holiday shopping with unreal deals. During our Holiday  Party which is one part buying bags, one part drinking wine and one part yapping it up about nothing in particular, our conversation turned to Thanksgiving traditions:  Which kid made the best paper turkey, who's hosting this year and of course the most intriguing part of the banter, "What to do with turkey leftovers?" Well, Beth N's family makes turkey soup and turkey tetrazzini (say that 3 times fast), and the Beth H's family makes turkey enchiladas.  Nothing beats Yvette's husband's Calzone filled with fresh roast turkey, homemade stuffing and cranberry sauce.  He buys pizza dough from a local restaurant, fills it with layers and bakes it until it's brown.  He cools it for a few minutes and then slices it revealing the beautiful layers.  It's just kind of fuel the MY gals need to get them through this busy holiday season.  By the way, the paper turkey pictured was created by Andrew, Michele's "I-really love-sports" 4th grader.

A very Happy Thanksgiving from Michele and Yvette.

P.S. go ahead spill gravy on your MY bag, it's okay, you can wipe it off.

Down to Earth, MY's green philosophy

When we were kids, there was obviously some global warming going on, but if your parents weren't earth scientists, you didn't know about it. However, back then, we lived by the three R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) as part of our daily lives and didn't think about it or label it.  Grandma saved rubber bands, there was always a jelly jar repurposed as a drinking glass and we used paperbags to cover our school books.

Here at MY, we stive to strike a balance between fashion and usefulness in designing our products.  Our philosophy is sewn with every stitch.

REDUCE

Reduce consumption - buy only what you love and buy only what lasts.  MY bags have both lasting style and lasting quality.   You won't tire of them and they won't get tired.

Reduce fuel emissions - drive less.  MY bags are stylish, weatherproof and back friendly... perfect for mass transit, foot traffic and all kinds of non-fossil fuel modes of transport in any kind of weather.

RE-USE

Skip the disposable stuff.   MY totes are so roomy that you can forgo the plastic or paper question at the store.  Just stash tonight's groceries in your Wide Tote.  MY bags have a water bottle pocket - specially designed for reusable bottles so you can stay hydrated without tapping the environment.

RECYCLE

Find a new home for old things.  A healthy approach to your MY addiction - when you just have to have the latest MY bag, go ahead and pass along that vintage (yet brand new looking) MY bag to a friend or donate it to one of many great organizations like Dress for Success.

There's no such thing as too green!  So even though we're feeling pretty green - Yvette is a mad recycler and Michele loves to compost every kitchen scrap; we know we can and should do more.  So we're asking you to share your favorite green habit so we can all be a little greener!

Best,

MY oilcloth co-founders, Michele and Yvette

We're not talking about George's wife or you-know-who that went to jail, but can bake her behind off.  We're talking about Martha Huntley.  She is the Martha you think of if you live in Brookline and when you think of her, you just smile, and for so many reasons. She is a fellow mompreneur who does it all.  She gives back to her community, raises great kids, and still manages to focus on her growing business! And she bakes!

Martha is a Renovation Coach.  Cool, right?  Her business is called Room For Change (Also, incredibly cool).  She will basically guide you through the renovation process (both big and small jobs) including holding your hand. If you do not think you don't need your hand held, well, then you haven't been through a renovation!

Martha has a fabulous event coming up as part of her Design En Route series of workshops.  This one is called "Salvaged Treasures for Home Design." Event includes transportation, tours of local resources, a catered lunch by KooKoo and a MY oilcloth tote.  It just doesn't get any better than this!

The workshop fee is $85.00 and it is happening on Thursday, November 19th from 9:00AM-1:30PM.  Spots are limited, so register today.  Here's the link to check out Martha and the Design En Route Event:

Yesterday, we received a question from a new customer "What is oilcloth?"  We get this question every once in a while so here's a little education to feed your oilcloth curiosity....

In the 1800's, oilcloth was a cotton fabric treated with linseed oil for waterproofness.  Originally sported by fishermen, sailors, and others in inclement positions.  During the mid 20th century oilcloth in bright plaids and flower splattered patterns was a common covering for kitchen tables.  Now shiny, kitchy 1950s retro printed oilcloth is produced in Mexico and can be easily be found from a number of suppliers on the internet.

In Europe, high quality cottons are coated to become "oilcloth" and it is from these textiles that we take our inspiration. We, Michele & Yvette, have created a modern luxury oilcloth by designing our own patterns and then printing these patterns on 100% cotton and then applying a durable translucent coating that says supple in all conditions.  All design work is done here in our Massachusetts studio and then our fabric is printed and coated in Korea.  We then produce a line of totes and handbags that are as resilent as women themselves.

Frankly, we love all types of oilcloth.  Many different kinds for many different uses.  We are proud to offer a US designed oilcloth that is of the highest quality beacuse after all feeling is believing.

Best,

Michele Sommer and Yvette Yelardy, co-founders MY oilcloth inc.

P.S.  We are in the middle of designing our new collection for 2010.  What would like to see us produce?

P.P.S  Thanks for your emails, blog responses and compliments about the quality and durability of our MY bags.  Julie Boris is the winner of last weeks contest.  A quote from Julie, "My duffle has stayed looking new throughout many ferry trips..."  Julie's comment will be added to our testimonial section of our website. Congrats Julie!
